Magazine Name Ideas
As I am making an Alternative R&B music magazine, I need a name for it. I decided that I wanted to name my magazine with something to do with technical music terms, so that my magazine can be more authentic. Whilst researching music terms, I came across the word 'Adagio' which means a composition written in a slow tempo, and the work 'Trill' which means a symbol that tells you in written music that there are rapids alternations between one tone and another.
I liked both the names equally, so I asked a group of my target audience to choose which name they preferred, and why.
I liked both the names equally, so I asked a group of my target audience to choose which name they preferred, and why.
The name 'TRILL' was more popular, as they said its 'easy to pronounce', is 'short and snappy', 'sounds musical' and the fact that it seems to suit my genre really well.
I then did some more research into the name, and realised that in urban terms 'trill' refers to someone who is considered to be well respected, and is a combination of the words 'true' and 'real'.
Therefore I have decided to name my magazine TRILL.

Artist Profile: Fashion & Style
These
are some of the items of accessories and clothing that I have collaged on
polyvore.com, to show the style and the type of clothing and of my artist
'Adam'. From this, I will be able to choose better clothing for my model to
wear, so that everything can match well and so that it all suits my music genre
of alternative R&B. All of the clothes and accessories on here fit my
genre, as they come across as 'suave and sophisticated' yet cool and laid back
at the same time. I decided to place a lot of shirts, as they are generally in
trend, and re worn my many male artists as they are very versatile depending on
the style of the shirt. I used colours such as grey, black,
blue and white, as they can work as both masculine with elements of femininity,
which is something I wanted to portray.
By adding
items like the work boots, a jacket and caps, I think you
can see different sides to his style which is something that I noticed many
male artists have
done. I think
that the fact that the items are quite normal, relates to the fact that my
artist doesn't want to be seen as a famous object, but more as a person.

Market Research - Printscreen of Current R&B & Alternative R&B Magazines
To
easily compare current R&B and alternative R&B magazines, I google
searched ‘R&B Magazines’ to see what would come up.
From doing this, I can clearly see that the most popular magazines, have large clear fonts used for the mastheads, and most of them were placed at the top. I think that the most commonly used colour schemes include the colours of white, black and red, and I think this is because red represents power, and often money, which is a common theme in R&B music. I also noticed that the male artists were all presented to look quite stern, and serious, whereas the women were presented in a more sexual manner. In comparison to other music genre magazines, I noticed that there were more black and white cover photographs used, so that is something that I will consider. As with most magazine covers, none of their faces are massively obstructed, however some of the mastheads were covered by the artists on the front. I think that this depends on the credibility of the magazine.
I then google searched 'Alternative R&B magazines'.
From the search, less magazine covers came up, which makes me want to explore this area of the market, as it hasn't been covered in great detail yet. I saw that the magazine covers (dashed circles in red), seemed to be more artistic, as the other photos (circled in green), were the photos used for the rest of that particular issue. Fro doing this, it has helped shaped the direction of which area I plan to cover within my magazine, as I have seen a gap in the market.

Artist Research - Branding
In
this presentation I am going to talk about the artists which synonymous to the
genre of Alternative R&B. As alternative R&B is a relatively new genre,
the majority of the music artists I have researched are currently in the
charts. I have looked at the way they have been branded, as it will help me
when it comes to creating my own artist.
