Genre Research: Music Videos for Alternative R&B

The Weeknd - Rolling Stone (Music Video)

The video for The Weeknd's song 'Rolling Stone' , which is song from his 'Trilogy' album, was released in 2012. It fits very well with the genre of Alternative R&B, because it follows similar patterns and rhythms, yet the topic of the song refers to taking a selection of drugs, despite it not being obvious. This is a good example of alternative R&B as the video itself is simple, yet carries a stronger message, instead of being more literal. The song also covers a larger metaphor; instead of settling on the sound and success of his early career, The Weeknd acknowledges that he wants to grow as an artist. The title is from to Bob Dylan's “Like A Rolling Stone”, and the phrase means a man who never settles down and restlessly makes his way around.

FKA twigs - Two Weeks (Music Video)

'Two Weeks' is the third track, and first single, from FKA twigs‘ debut full-length album LP1, in 2014. The video itself is typical of Alternative R&B, because it is very artistic, and the main connections between the meaning of the song and the video is more vague. The strong imagery is reminiscent of the themes that are often followed in this genre, as the video looks opulent, yet dark and inviting.

SZA - Babylon (Music Video)

This song, Babylon, by singer SZA, focuses more on the philosophical thinking that Alternative R&B can offer. For example, in this song she talks about being tired of always having to apologise for actions you felt were the right thing for you to do, and if you felt it was right then why not do it again. also, the video for this song features one main scene, which shows a short story. The message behind the video is more literal, however when it is combined with the lyrics of the song, ideas regarding religious imagery, and abandoning emotions.

Audience Research Part 2 - Focus Group

This is my focus group, and I had them answer some questions regarding the comparison of two R&B magazines. I had them compare Billboards September 2012 edition, and Vibe’s May 2010 edition.
Here are the questions I asked, and the responses from my focus group:
11)      Firstly, what type of music do you like to listen to?
Alana: I like pop, and R&B music, especially the more up-tempo stuff. Honestly, I think there is quite a lot available for this genre – especially pop because it’s the stuff that’s always at the top of the charts. Recently I have been interested in mid-tempo R&B, similar to what is being done in alternative R&B. I think that in modern day, there is so many choices of music genres to listen to, which I think we are lucky to be exposed to.
Rhea: I listen to mainly Hip-Hop, rap, and alternative R&B. I like the way that lyrics can be used to portray and communicate different messages, and tell stories because I think that on the radio we are only exposed to music that is missing these ideas.
Neel: Personally, I like alternative R&B, especially as it is a genre that is becoming more and more known. Artists like The Weeknd, who focus on the music content rather than the fame and money side of his career are really good to see because there isn't a lot of mystery around artists these days.

2) Specifically what do you think about the features on the covers?
N: The billboard cover is very plain, because there are only three different features, but that lets you focus on the photograph. The features apply to the genre of the magazine, and they are a balance between being music related and rivalry between other music artists. I think that they should expand on what they put for the features because it doesn't give you an insight into the rest of the magazine.
A: I think that the Vibe cover has a good selection of different features because some of them include fashion, music, culture, sports and obviously music artists but then some of them might not be relevant for some music magazines. I prefer when there is more content regarding music when I buy a music magazine. I like the fonts that they have used because it is clear to read against the background, and there is a good balance between red and white. I think the main feature which is meant to be about Trey Songz is a bit small because if you didn't know who he was you may confuse his name with the others on the cover. I think that the numbers could have been put in another colour, to help them stand out more, however it would distract us from the main focus of the cover.
3) What do you specifically think about the photographs that have been used on the covers?
R: I think that the image on the Billboard cover is very bright, as they have added that lens flare/light at the top. I think that some may think it is difficult to see but I think it makes her look younger and it suits a pop genre more. I think that the limited colours on the page are all taken from the undertones of the cover photo, so everything sits together well. I don't like the fact  that her head covers the masthead because you can't read the masthead, but I don't think that it is necessary as Billboard is well known.
A: I think that the photo is very sexual because he doesn't have clothes on, he is looking directly at the camera, and they have made his body wet. I think that this is appealing to women more then men but then this is balanced out by the features and colour choices. The fact that the background is tiles shows that he is in a shower, so I think that this is definitely more appealing to women.

4) What are your thoughts on the colour schemes?
R: I think that the colour scheme for the Billboard cover is harder to work out, because on first glance you would say that there isn't one, but I think that they established their colour scheme from the undertones in her skin, her eyes and the Billboard logo.
N: The combination of red, white and black is used a lot in music magazines as well as Vibe, and I think they all make each other stand out here. I think that it matches the masthead too much because its quite a large space taken up by the one colour of red. The fact that the photograph is quite dark makes the red and white stand out more, which is good and easy to read.

5) Who do you think the covers/magazines are aimed at?
N: I think that the Billboard cover is aimed at people between the ages of 16 and 35, because of the genre of music that the cover artist makes. Also, the colours may be more appealing to women, because they are lighter and the picture is more feminine.
A: The Vibe cover is aimed at women because of the sexual nature of the photograph, but I think that the features are more suited to people that are interested in Hip-Hop culture because there is a wide variety of different topics on them.

6)      Overall, what do you think about the Vibe cover?
R: I think it definitely makes a statement. Especially with his gestures and facial expressions and things like his body. You can just tell who he is. He is definitely presented in a sexual way, and the water dripping on his body exaggerates that. I like the colours - they're used a lot in magazines and I like the way the features are spread out.
N: It looks kind of powerful, but that’s just because we can see so much of him, and the picture takes up a large amount of the cover. The spacing out and layout looks good but I think they could’ve fitted more on the front.

 7)      Overall, what do you think of the Billboard cover?
A: She looks really innocent, kind of sweet but to be honest I think that’s just from the brightness of the cover. I think her styling suits what the coverlines are saying. I think I prefer the vibe cover though, it’s more impactful.
N: I like the way they layered the text over her hair, and then hid some underneath her arm - it looks professional. The little circle on the top right corner adds some ‘fun’ to it, and it kind of mimics the font of the masthead.

Research Rationale

The target group that I have the most access to is teenagers and young adults; therefore I shall make my target audience teenagers and young adults aged between 16 and 25. As I have a large access to people who are my age and are in my target audience I can use this to my advantage to conduct fair and accurate research. I will also use them so that I can get a better understanding of which music magazines are most popular, and what encourages them to do so. For my market research I will start by looking at the constructions of different music magazines, and comparing the differences and similarities that they have, which will enable me to see which elements are the most successful from them. I will also do surveys on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, as they have large access to my target audience.

For my audience research, I will be conducting qualitative research which will allow me to get responses that have more complex answers, which will help me understand why people respond in certain ways, and I can use this to my advantage to make my music magazine successful. This means I will get a large variety of responses, which will be useful, but difficult to sort through and decipher.

I will also collect quantitative research which will allow me to compare statistics that I will gather from research using a survey. The result of this will be structured which will make it easier to make a conclusion about the best aspects of.

Once I have collected all of my research I will be able to ensure that I know the most successful elements needed to make my music magazine successful.

Magazine Deconstruction

This is a magazine deconstruction I have done of two Billboard magazine front covers. I have highlighted the main conventions that each follows and goes against.

Magazine Typography

This is a selection of music magazine fonts that I have collected, and it clearly shows that the fonts used on music magazines are very clear for users to read, and not very cursive.
Exceptions to this would be ‘BBC Music’, Modzik’,‘Choir & Organ’ as they are serif, yet they are still easy to read due to the colours and spacing between the letters. They appear more hand-written which appeals more to their target audience. Those fonts were chosen due to the genre of music that they represent, as it suit their house style, and therefore is another reason why they appeal to their target market.
The other magazines, like MOJO, NME, The Source, Vibe, Respect and Wire have used block capitals, which is a common theme throughout as they are more modern and casual, which is an aesthetic that appeals to their target market perhaps due to age. Also, as they look modern their target market will be naturally more drawn to it, and therefore make them more recognisable and helps establish the brand that they wish to portray.

The use of graphics within certain fonts, like on ‘Hip-Hop Weekly’ and ‘The Source’ further portrays the brand image, as it further solidifies ideas that the target audience have about that particular music magazine, as well as appeal to them. The use of the microphone reiterates the idea that they are music magazines, and using the stars on the Top of the Pops magazine relates to the idea that it is a pop magazine, yet the use of stars on the Classic Rock shows you that it is a country/rock magazine and this is due to the different in the colours and fonts.

I also looked at some fonts that were used for pull quotes and features, to see how they compared to mastheads on music magazines. I saw that almost all of the fonts were bold and clear, and completely stood out from the background. This is so that all the words can stand out, as they can be difficult to read. Other fonts, that were in a contrasting font, were in a style that looked hand written, or serif and were quotes. I think this helps distinguish the differences, and therefore will be easier for audiences to locate direct quotes from their favourite artists.

PRELIM TASK: Audience Feedback

This is some target audience feedback, which I got from some Year 10's and Year 11's. They commented on the cohesion of the two pages, what they liked and what they disliked.

PRELIM TASK: Finished Products & Cohesion

These are my final finished products for my college magazine 'HIGHLIGHT', which are the front/cover page, and the contents page. My magazine is aimed at GCSE students.

I think that the overall use of the space on the cover works well, as it doesn't appear to be too overcrowded, as all the writing is readable, however there is something that catches your eye at every glance. I think that there is strong cohesion between the two pages, due to the way that the shape of the graphics are on both pages, and then mimicked with the shape of the photos, page numbers, and the angle at which the feature lines are written. I think that it works well because it appeals to my target audience, as it is modern. I also used the same fonts, colours and  blending options, so that there would be familiarity between the two pages. I also decided to use another photo of my cover model, so that you would be able to see how the story and theme has been carried through.

PRELIM TASK: Contents Page Layout

This is a presentation on how I decided on the layout, for my contents page, i my college magazine 'HIGHLIGHT' and how I used Photoshop to change the layout.

PRELIM TASK: Examples of Photograph Manipulation

To enhance the cover photo for my college magazine, I manipulated it by adjusting the brightness and contrast, changing the levels, and using the magnetic lasso tool to blur the background of the photo.

The first manipulation I did was using the magnetic lasso tool, and I went around the silhouette of the model. I then blurred the background, and the aim of this was to make the model stand out more, and hide the details that could be seen in the reflection of the glass.

The second photograph manipulation I did was adjusting the brightness and contrast because I thought that the photo looked slightly grey, and this meant that it looked a bit dark as well. By changing this I think that the photo now looks brighter, and so it portrays a more positive message to my audience.

The third manipulation I did was changing the levels of the cover photo. I found that changing the levels of the cover photo helped take away the sharp brightness, which was a bit harsh to look at. I think that it worked well because now the cover photo looks more pleasing, which would appeal to the target audience better.

PRELIM TASK: Cover Layout Decisions and Using Photoshop

This is a presentation on how I decided on the layout of my college magazine 'HIGHLIGHT' and how I used Photoshop to change the layout.

PRELIM TASK: Final Shots

These are the final shots I have chosen, and why, for my college magazine 'HIGHLIGHT'.

PRELIM TASK: Masthead and Font Decisions

When deciding on a font for the masthead of my college magazine ‘HIGHLIGHT’, I knew that I wanted it to look clean, sharp and easy to read. I considered using fonts 1, 2 and 3, from dafont.com, however I found that they looked too cartoonish for my magazine, which is meant to be focused on aiding school studies and exams. I also looked at 'classic school fonts’, however I found them difficult to read, like font 4.

Even though the fonts were similar, and the main differences between them were the angle of which they were slanted by, however I chose the following font because I thought it matched the name of my magazine the best.

Once I had chosen the font for the masthead, I experimented with the ‘Stroke’ feature, because I wanted my masthead to literally be highlighted. I also experimented with features like ‘Bevel and Emboss’ and ‘Drop Shadow’, which are elements which I decided to include to enhance the masthead. My final choice for the masthead was C.
